Ktima Gerovassiliou lies on the slopes of Epanomi, a few kilometres south east of Thessaloniki.
The state of the art winery is surrounded by a meticulously cared for vineyard, surrounded by sea on three sides with views of mythological Mount Olympus.
The sandy clay sea deposits of the area, along with mild winters and temperate summers, create an ideal ecosystem for vine cultivation.
The estate is the result of the vision of Vangelis Gerovassiliou, who comes from an agricultural local Epanomi family with a tradition in viticulture. After completing his studies at the School of Agriculture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, he specialised in Oenology and Viticulture at the University of Bordeaux. In 1981, he revived the family vineyard by planting the almost extinct Greek variety Malagousia. He was the first to produce wine from this grape, after appreciating its vast potential for high quality wines. His efforts saved this grape from certain extinction.
The vineyard now contains a large number of varieties, both Greek –Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Limnio, Mavroudi, Mavrotragano and Xinomavro– and international –Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah and Merlot. Other known and unknown varieties, mostly Greek, are cultivated for experimental purposes. The modern winery includes wine making, bottling and ageing areas, where state of the art technοlogy co-exists with timeless tradition to produce wines typical of the microclimate (terroir) of the area. Wines are aged in a 3,500 square metre cellar under ideal temperature and humidity conditions.
